The Submarine without a Periscope

Chateau de VincennesLeaders have to be proactive and disciplined to avoid being cut off from the world around them. In a recent newsletter I wrote about the submarine without a periscope, an evocative description offered by one observer to describe the French high command, based at the Chateau de Vincennes, at the start of WWII.

I was in Paris at Easter, and went down to the end of the Metro’s Line 1 to see the chateau for myself. Here is my picture of the Keep.

This episode in 20th Century history has a number of other useful reminders for leaders which I discussed in 2008.
